When Susila found out she had breast cancer, she was in shock, but did not cry or panic. Instead, she chose to take a more positive approach by assuring herself that 'cancer is not a death sentence'. She decided to place more focus and emphasis on her treatment and recovery.
Susila’s worst fear was being diagnosed with cancer. She had always felt as though she was prone to it. These fears came true when doctors confirmed she had breast cancer. Throughout her journey, Susila kept a positive outlook despite fighting multiple health issues prior, such as an ectopic pregnancy, excruciating back aches, and severe abdominal pain. She met Dr. Raghu Ram in February of 2021, soon after being diagnosed with breast cancer that January, and later referred to him as ‘god in human form’. He offered her counseling throughout her journey and his surgery gave her an excellent outcome. Chemo and radiation was extremely tough on her, making her feel like she was ‘on fire’, and creating many other side effects. However, she had a strong support system. Her husband has been very supportive throughout the entire process, and she received guidance, pep talks, and moral support from her pastor’s wife and her cousin. She finally ended her treatment in November of 2021. Susila now has her own YouTube channel called ‘knowledge bricks’. In this, she provides confidence to those affected by breast cancer and educates others by talking about things such as the importance of early breast cancer detection. Outside of that, she gives interviews about her journey and recovery, talks about Dr. Raghu Ram’s awareness campaign, and counsels patients from around the country. Susila has made several lifestyle changes after her recovery. She regularly cooks at home instead of eating out, does 45 minutes of yoga a day, and despite challenges such as not being able to teach in the summer due to her heat tolerance, she remains positive and strong.
The first thing Susila did to begin her treatment was to find the perfect doctor. She came across Dr. Raghu Ram and after meeting him, she felt as if she was ‘in safe hands’. By this time, her cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. She was presented with two surgical treatment options and ended up choosing breast conservation surgery: a removal of the breast lesion with the reshaping of the breast, as well as removal of axillary lymph nodes. Along with this, she had to go through three weeks of radiotherapy to the breast. Susila also had to endure eight rounds of chemotherapy, with devastating side effects. Chemotherapy was extremely hard on Susila. Her body could not take it. She lost all her hair, slept for very long stretches at a time, had mouth ulcers, and lost muscle control in her bowels. She compared going through chemo and radiation therapy as like ‘being on fire’.
